Child protection

How to ask the ministry for help

Tips about entering into a Special Needs Agreement

Before you enter into a Special Needs Agreement:

  • Talk to a ministry social worker to learn about everything that is possible under the agreement.
  • Remain actively involved in your child's life and future planning. Always put your child's needs first.
  • Get help from an advocate or community living worker to develop a plan to present to the social worker. Remember that you are the expert on your child's needs.
  • Get legal advice before signing an agreement.
  • Be realistic about the agreement. Agree only to what you know is helpful. Make the plan fit your child's and family's needs. If your child spends time in foster care, make sure your child has regular contact with you and important family members.
  • Keep in mind that entering into a formal agreement with the ministry means that your home and your parenting are open to ministry scrutiny.
  • Contact an advocate or lawyer immediately if the ministry decides that child protection concerns warrant further investigation and the ministry opens a "protective" file. If you are financially eligible and your case is covered, legal aid can help. See If someone reports you to the ministry for more information.
