Child protection

How to get help if someone reports you to the ministry

Presentation hearing

The presentation hearing is supposed to be a brief hearing to decide two things:

  • whether the ministry was justified in removing your child from your care
  • where the best place is for your child to live until there can be a full protection hearing to decide whether your child needs protection

This hearing sometimes takes place in two stages:

If your child is 12 years old or older, he or she will also be told about the hearing by the social worker and should plan to attend. Other members of your family or other groups may also have to be informed of the presentation hearing.

Note: In some courts, the first appearance and the full presentation hearing may take place all at once.
