How to get help if someone reports you to the ministry

Tips for dealing with the ministry as your own advocate

Make every effort to get a lawyer or some legal advice before you try dealing with the Ministry of Children and Family Development. But if you are going to advocate on your own behalf, consider the following tips:

  • Be honest with yourself about your strengths and weaknesses.
  • Gather all the facts you need to present your case.
  • Treat ministry workers as you would like them to treat you.
  • Listen carefully and ask questions until you have all the information you need.
  • Know when to ask for help.
  • Consider the impact your actions will have on others, especially your child.
  • Examine your motives to make sure you are advocating for your and your child's best interest. If you are angry, keep angry behaviour under control.
  • Do your homework. Research as much as possible about the law, child behaviour, children's rights, parent's rights, parenting, communication, and problem-solving.
  • Keep complete and accurate records.
