Child protection

How to make a complaint against the ministry

Reasons to make a complaint

Some of the reasons you might want to make a complaint to the Ministry of Children and Family Development include the following:

  • You or your child doesn't receive a service that ministry staff promised.
  • The ministry denies you a service that you're eligible for and that you or your child needs.
  • The ministry gives you wrong, incomplete, or inadequate information.
  • Your child's safety is put at risk in a foster home.
  • Your wishes for your child's education, religion, health care, diet, or cultural practices aren't being respected or followed.
  • Decisions are made about your child without including you or your child.
  • You aren't being treated with dignity, respect, or honesty.
  • You're being discriminated against because of your age, gender, sexual orientation, race, beliefs, religion, colour, language, or lifestyle.
  • Your personal information isn't being kept confidential.
  • Decisions and actions made by ministry staff are based on wrong information or assumptions.
  • The quality of service has been poor.
  • You're a child in care and your rights haven't been respected.

Important: If you think someone in the ministry has acted in a criminal manner toward you or your child, contact a lawyer or the police immediately.

Foster parents who have a complaint about how the Ministry of Children and Family Development treats them can contact the area manager for the ministry. They can also get help from the BC Federation of Foster Parent Associations.
